In much of the Netherlands the ground is too soft to carry a building directly. Piles then transfer the load to deeper, load-bearing sand or gravel layers. The choice of pile system determines cost, vibration nuisance and speed.
The main types
Driven precast concrete piles are fast and reliable but cause vibration and noise. Screw piles and cast-in-situ piles are low-vibration and suit sites near existing buildings. Bored piles are used for heavier loads or tight spaces.
The choice
Ground investigation (cone penetration tests) is the basis: it sets the bearing capacity and required pile length. A geotechnical adviser helps pick the optimal technique.
